CHILD

With these artworks I wanted to explore the question what it means to be thrown into this existence. I am interested in childhood. Not in children per se, but in their rising intellectual and emotional concept of the world. Having had the most protected and positive environment a child could have myself, I still remember profound feelings of fear and uncomfortableness about my being brought into existence and being forced to function in a world that seemed frightening to me more than anything else.

I do also remember religious feelings. These feelings were at first distinctly different to my strictly catholic environment, but later started to merge into a confusing religiously emotional mixture full of excitement, agony and deception.

In my work, I would like to examine the mental space before such a violent taking possession of a child’s world. Stripping off all man-made religious inventions and ideologies, that will at their best spoil the child’s clear view on the world for life, I like to take a closer look at the intellectual and emotional gaze of the little being on the world: The disheartening helplessness, the bottomless joy, the dismantling insights, the burning fear, the immutable love and the courage to keep walking into an overpowering future.
